Luton Town Football Club has announced today that it is paying the living wage and is on the path to accreditation by The Living Wage Foundation.
It is the first professional English club to do so.
Chair of Labour Friends of Football, Andrew Pope, said:”Well done and congratulations to Luton Town, its staff and its owners. Football clubs should be leading local communities and displaying leadership to them.
“Paying the living wage shows they care about local people and their standard of living.”
“If Luton Town can do it, so can the clubs that are paying tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds a week to players.”
“It is just a matter of time before other league, and Premier League, clubs follow suit.”
“Labour Friends of Football activists and members have been working on this campaign since April.”
“So its one down, 91 to go!”
